Jean Doran painting raffle to benefit Lewes Historical Society

November 25, 2020

Lewes Historical Society is raffling tickets for artist Jean Doran’s acrylic “Doctor’s Office” painting, her rendition of a building on the historical society campus.

Doran created the painting specifically to benefit the society during its Christmas Tour of Lewes virtual event. The piece is on display at Citizens Bank on Second Street in Lewes.

Reminiscent of an ancient Grecian temple, the building known as the Doctor’s Office is the only surviving example of Greek Revival architecture in Lewes. It was constructed in 1836 and was possibly first built as a bank. It became associated with medicine when it served as the offices of Dr. David Hall, Dr. William Paynter Orr, and Dr. Richard Beebe. It was donated to LHS in the early 1990s.

This original piece follows Doran’s work, “December on the Canal,” painted and donated in 2013 to benefit the society’s holiday event.

Chances to win the painting are $5 apiece and available to purchase on the Lewes Historical Society’s website as well as in the historic Ryves Holt House, 218 Second St., and the Lewes History Museum, 101 Adams Ave. Proceeds will benefit the society’s efforts to promote and advocate the preservation, interpretation and cultural enrichment of the Lewes region through museum exhibitions, educational programs, historical research and publications.
