Joan ‘Frank’ Norwood, Nanticoke matriarch

Joan Crawford Harmon Norwood, “Frank,” of Millsboro, departed this life Tuesday, June 12, 2012, at home surrounded by her loving family.

Born Oct. 16, 1930, in Millsboro, she was the daughter of the late Ephriam Lincoln and Elizabeth Patience Harmon. She attended the Nanticoke Indian Schoo, and was a member of the Indian Mission United Methodist Church. She married William “Bill” Norwood in 1950, who preceded her in 2011. They had one daughter, Ingrid Dawn “Gussie” Norwood, who also preceded her in 1993.

She loved to clean, loved cooking and had a sense of humor that cannot be replaced. One of her favorite past times was playing Pinochle with the family. She and her husband hosted the Nanticoke PowWow annually at their home. She was a beloved matriarch in the Nanticoke community, with their home open to hospitality for the entire neighborhood.

She is survived by her grandchildren: Mark and his fiancé Sandy; Tara and husband Sterling, and the most important children of her later years, her great-grandchildren: Christopher, Skyler, Katelynn, and Matthew. She is also survived by her son-in-law, Phillip; sister-in-law Pat Harmon; and many nieces, nephews, extended family and a great many friends.

There will be a viewing and visitation with the family from 6 to 8 p.m., Saturday, June 16, at Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro. A funeral service and celebration of her life will be held at 1 p.m., Sunday, June 17, at Indian Mission United Methodist Church, 22701 Indian Mission Road, Harbeson. Friends may call one hour prior for visitation to the service. Pastor Karen Mumford will officiate. Interment follows at the Indian Mission UMC Cemetery. Floral tributes are welcomed.
