Joey Hawley wins two 5K races while on vacation

Susan Dunn is Cannonball 5K women’s winner

Joey Hawley, 31, from Irwin, Pa., spent his vacation at the beach winning a pair of Seashore Striders 5K races. Hawley dusted the field like a Chorman biplane Sunday morning in Lewes, winning the Cannonball 5K in 17:37. Three days earlier, Hawley won the Run, White and Blue 5K in 17:12.

“We have a newborn and a 2-year-old who likes to get up early,” Hawley said after the Cannonball run. “I’m glad I didn’t have to run any faster.” 

Susan Dunn was the overall women’s champion for the Cannonball 5K in 22:17. Masters champions were Dan Matta in 22:58 and Jackie Quigley in 23:15. 

Crazy fast times from the young runners included Mason Morrone, 13, 20:53; Walter Schroder, 17, 21:06; Bennett Brumbley ,11, 23:08; Stephen Hart ,12, 23:11; Ethan Thompson, 9, 23:16; Blake Huffman, 15, 27:58; and Little Ellie Burris, 6, 49:41, escorted by Little Poppy Kevin Smith, 49:44.
