Joseph Kirschner, retired educator

March 3, 2021

Dr. Joseph Kirschner of Hartly passed away Saturday, Feb. 27, 20201, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in 1930 in Dallas, Texas. The family moved to New Orleans where he spent his school-age years. Upon graduation Joe joined the U.S. Navy and began studies at Tulane University where he completed a degree in chemical engineering. He used his degree to work in the oil and gas industry. He didn’t enjoy that work, so he returned to Tulane to obtain a master’s in education. He taught in the New Orleans public school system and decided to pursue higher education.

Joe then went to Rutgers State University where he earned his doctorate. Dr. Kirschner went on to teach at University of Alabama, Kansas State University, and finally Youngstown State, from which he retired. He spent the last 45 years of his life fully retired in Chicago, Ill. He enjoyed writing haiku, traveling, and drinking coffee at his favorite coffee shops.

Joe is survived by his daughter Cindy Grygo (David); a grandson Mackenzie Ware; and longtime friend Beverly Bloom. Dr. Kirschner’s family would like to acknowledge and thank Vitas Hospice for their assistance and guidance.

Services will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in his memory to www.musicalartsinstitute.org in Chicago, or locally www.vitascommunityconnection.org.
