Joss II opens on Route 1
After the classic gift shop Joss closed in 2000, Ross Alexander’s employees were not ready to let go of this “symbol of all good things.”
Originally located at the corner of Baltimore Avenue and First Street, the shop was a fixture in downtown Rehoboth Beach since the 1960s.
Now, a new yet familiar business has opened on Route 1 to continue the gift shop’s legacy. Joss II owner Dina Deakyne and her right-hand woman, Marilyn Layton, worked at the original Joss; Layton worked there for 27 years before it closed in 2000.
Alexander passed away in 2002. The house he transformed into a multi-level shop still stands in Rehoboth, now as a furniture gallery.
Deakyne and Layton, both of Lewes, discussed reviving the shop for years before deciding now was the right time. Francis “Fran” Hueber, companion of Alexander, praised the women’s “marvelous” work in recreating Joss and exhibiting the merchandise. “It’s a nice addition to the community,” Huber said.
Many original customers from Joss attended the grand opening of Joss II Friday, April 1. Deakyne and Hueber marveled at seeing the old, familiar faces again.
The store carries a variety of colorful giftware and elegant home ware, such as candles, porcelain, wall decorations, intricate paper goods, doormats and colorful dog collars. Additional items will arrive soon, such as gift cards and playing cards.
Asked to select an item of interest, Deakyne could not select just one. “I think it’s all interesting,” she said. Layton said the biggest difference between the two shops is that Christmas goods have been discontinued, although Joss II is ordering from many of the original or similar vendors. Deakyne said the new location is good because of the free parking and increased highway commercialization.
Joss II is located at 19470 Coastal Highway, Unit 5. Hours are Monday to Saturday. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday noon to 4 p.m. For more information, call Joss II at 302-227-8373.
