Kindle owner Matt DiSabatino recognizes trompe l’oeil artist

February 2, 2022

Lewes artist Jean Doran, left, and Kindle restaurant owner Matt DiSabatino celebrate the installation of Doran’s trompe l’oeil painting on the outside wall at Kindle.

The painting is the first of a series of trompe l’oeil paintings that Art in Bloom, a committee of Lewes in Bloom, is sponsoring for Lewes. The art technique aims to fool the viewer by using realistic imagery.

DiSabatino said both patrons and staff have already expressed enthusiasm for the painting.

“Jean’s talent allowed her to capture the best feature of the restaurant,” he said.

Doran has been painting since childhood; she moved to Lewes in 1998. She said her inspiration for this particular scene came after she toured the restaurant.

Art in Bloom is seeking both artists and buildings for future paintings. Anyone interested may contact Ed Zygmonski at edzlewes@comcast.net. For more information about Art in Bloom, go to lewesinbloom.org.
