Youth Night at Champions Stadium Wednesday May 6 is a tradition unlike any other.
The unbeaten Cape Junior Varsity under the direction of head coach Drew Messick beat Sussex Tech 18 to 2 in the first game. Sussex tech has restarted its program as JV only and there are 7 seniors on the squad.
“ I know many of these Cape girls so I know what we’re in for,"Coach Anthoiny Carmen said before the game. I come for the boys' side. My daughter Stella is a junior of the team and assistant coach Mallory Reed had daughter Stella a junior and freshman Dylan. The kids have been great; they just want to play and learn and get better.”
Cape throttled back early moving leading scorers back to defense but all players on the Cape roster had shooting skills including goalie Dylan Peck who had a goal to go along with 3 saves.
Scorers for Cape were Delainey Smith,Meredith Frederick,Blair Chubb each with 3; Venice Strebs,Annabell Bonk with 2;and single goals from Alyssa Flamini,Ariana Cornescu, Linley Draper, Daisy Hughes, Harper Derrick, and Mackenzie Kupa.
“I’ll miss this group, not only great players but great team chemistry, “said Coach Drew Messick. “They really supported one another and had the entire season.”
The Cape varsity followed with a 20-0 win over Lake Forest. The Spartans are 0-11 having been shut out 7 times while scoring only 1 goal three times.
Goal scorers for Cape were: Mackenzie Todd 3. Avary Miller, Claire Lopez, Regan Best each with 2,and scoring 1 goal were Hazel Mancari, Alexis Zolper, Amara Fruchtman, Cora Conway, Ally Diehl, Amalia Fruchtman, Mairead Rishko, Mikaela Gordon, Alysa McCarthy,Layla Conn and Kemper Cox. Assists were Best 4, Lopez 2 and Zolper and Cox each with 1.
Wrestling Coach Mike Hansen volunteers as his daughter Alexis is a 10th graders on the team. Head Coach Laurel Sweet had daughter Amelia 9th grade and Abigail 12 grade on the team. Alana Aguilar is a varsity assistant.
’Most of our kids not only have no lacrosse experience, they have no sports experience,”Hansen said.
“We’re all just trying to keep this sport going”
