Parents of middle school students have a new option for enrichment activities, thanks to a new curriculum launched by Lefty’s Alley & Eats in Lewes.

General Manager Gary Foley said the afternoon program will combine life skills education and entertainment.

“With local students only receiving in-person instruction two days per week, we thought this could help fill some gaps with meaningful instruction and provide working parents with a much-needed window. We’re ready to rock it,” Foley smiled.

Two courses will be offered. Executive Chef Paige van den Burg will lead Young Master Chefs, a six-week class that teaches the basics of gourmet cooking and presentation through lectures, demonstrations and hands-on activities that explore international cuisine and generational recipes.

“Students will be able to create an appetizer we’ll feature on our menu,” Foley said.

Licensed chiropractor Dr. Krista Griffin will lead Possibility and Potential, a four-week program in which students will explore science through quantum physics, meditation and mindfulness.

“Dr. Griffin has more than 20 years of experience in counseling and teaching,” Foley said. “That’s really valuable right now in the pandemic, especially with this age group.”

Each course includes two hours of instruction and two hours of supervised activity such as bowling and game play; a socially distanced study hall will be an option instead of the group activity. Dinner and snacks will be provided.

If schools continue with the hybrid learning model, Foley said, Lefty’s U will likely continue with more offerings and expand into high school classes, such as SAT prep.

Courses are for students in grades six through eight only, Foley said, and will be offered in pods of 10 students. Pods will meet from 1 to 6 p.m., one day a week, for four to six weeks, depending on the course. Young Master Chefs begins Tuesday, Oct. 6 and Friday, Oct. 9, and Possibility and Potential begins Wednesday, Oct. 7.

Students must wear masks and must pass a daily temperature check to be admitted.
