Let freedom ring and legalize fireworks
One of the most outmoded and paternalistic laws we have in Delaware is the outright ban against possession and use of all consumer fireworks. According to a pyrotechnic website, Delaware is one of only four states – along with Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York – to have such a ban. Getting rid of that law is long overdue.
How much sense does it make to have gun laws that allow a citizen to walk down the street with a loaded pistol on his or her hip, in full view of God and everyone, while a lighted sparkler on Fourth of July can get you slapped with a ticket? The obvious answer is no sense at all.
This is one of those laws that is rarely enforced, causes police officers to scratch their heads, clogs up law books already too full and perpetuates the myth that people need government to make decisions for them when common sense is twice as effective. It’s been known for thousands of years that the more government does for people the less they do for themselves.
Laws against fireworks are a great irony in a land where pyrotechnic displays are used to celebrate our Independence Day freedoms. We’re free, but in Delaware don’t be caught with a sparkler or a Roman candle.
The bottom line with fireworks is that they need to be used responsibly, like so many other things that we hold in our hands which could be dangerous if misused. It’s far more effective and efficient to educate people than to regulate them.
We look forward to the day when individuals as well as communities and organizations in Delaware can buy and use fireworks legally and responsibly.
On a final note of celebration and independence, it’s great to see the community spirit at work once again that will enable the Rehoboth Beach Main Street organization to launch a major July Fourth fireworks display over the ocean. Many individuals, businesses, community organizations and government services contribute their money and support to fill the sky with majestic magic for residents and visitors in a safe, fun and coordinated fashion. That’s the people at work for themselves.
