Letter: Milton Garden Tour chair thanks community

October 16, 2018

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support of the Milton Garden Tour.  Thanks to the following businesses for their help with pre-tour ticket sales: Salon Milton, Hillside Flowers, Peppers Greenhouses, and Milton Historical Society in Milton and Lewes Printing in Lewes.  Many thanks to Jen Ellingsworth, the Beach Paper, the Cape Gazette and the Explorer Magazine for your support.  Photographer Nick Roth braved the rain to take some marvelous photos, and we thank him.

We thank all the local businesses that posted flyers and had save-the-date cards for customers to pick up, and the Milton Fire Department, Rogers Signs and Community Bank for posting the tour on their signs. The tour would not have been possible if we had not had seven lovely gardens on the tour, and we thank those garden owners for all their hard work and hospitality on tour day.  And then there were the artists and other special event people who found shelter from the rain on porches and did their thing. Dave Downing with his steel drums entertained everyone all day.  But most of all, thanks to everyone who purchased a tour ticket, and came out with your umbrellas to see the gardens.

We were very disappointed with the weather which contributed to a much smaller turnout than we had hoped.  As a friend of mine used to say, “It is what it is,” and that certainly applied to the weather that day.  It was a very tough year for gardening with the high heat and humidity that really prevented gardening work on many days.

And then, of course, when the rain came it would last for days or be such a heavy downpour that it would destroy some plants. However, we were thankful not to have the rain and flooding problems of the Carolinas or the wildfires in the West.  So after a week of rest, we move forward to our next activity.

We will once again have a space in the Milton Fire Hall for Hollyfest Saturday, Dec. 8, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The club will be selling fresh greenery, including wreaths, swags, bundles of greens, grave mounds and table arrangements.  We will also be selling raffle tickets for our dessert-of-the month raffle. The winner receives 12 dozen homemade cookies for the month of December and a special dessert each month for the next 11 months.
The raffle winner will be selected at the end of Hollyfest. The club will also have a table at the last Milton Farmers Market which is their Harvest Market Friday, Nov. 16, from noon to 4 p.m.

We will showcase items for Hollyfest plus have some fall arrangements as well. Thank you to everyone for their continued support of the Milton Garden Club.  For information about the club or their upcoming events, call Kathryn at 402-684-3804 or go to www.miltongardenclub.org.
