Letter: Rehoboth needs to enforce beach rules

September 7, 2018

Last weekend we were at our almost every day beach spot on Grenoble Street. There were several tents and at least three dogs on the beach.

We try to let people know that these things are not allowed so they do not incur a fine. We told one woman that dogs are not allowed on the beach and she replied “I know.” With that obstinate reply I had enough, and called the police.

They quickly sent a seasonal officer to the beach and enforced the tent rule to two people but did nothing about the dogs on the beach. The officer may not have seen the dogs because she did not roam the beach looking for them.

I realize that the police force, even with seasonal officers, is understaffed and cannot see everything, but when you are called to a beach, do something more than just walk through.

My real concern is how lax the enforcement of the beach rules is this year. I feel as though because the rules have not been strictly enforced, and when they are, only a warning is given, that people are just doing whatever they want. Warnings are OK, but warnings do not do anything.

The word that you are penalizing violators will spread quickly, and people will then do the right thing. I am personally one that does not like a lot of rules, but if there is a rule then it must be enforced.
