Lewes adds sidewalk stencils for pedestrian and cyclist safety

July 28, 2018

July is Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Month in Lewes, and the city is taking steps to mark sidewalk intersections with a stenciled message: “Over 12 years old: Walk Your Bike.”

Mike Tyler, Lewes Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee chair, said, “Many communities and cities do not permit cycling on sidewalks because, as in Lewes, it is against the law. Also, many folks who walk on our sidewalks have raised concerns for their safety after being ‘almost run over’ by bicyclists. Marking our sidewalks demonstrates that we are concerned for the safety of our pedestrians, and we want to keep cyclists off our sidewalks.”

City law does allow cyclists under 12 years of age to ride on city sidewalks. The safety message will be stenciled on Savannah Road and Kings Highway sidewalks, primarily at crosswalk intersections.
