Lewes boat Mahal wins one of the regatta cups

It’s Lewes Yacht Club vs. Corinthian in 14th annual Cape-to-Cape Challenge

Lewes Yacht Club captains and crew dominated action in the performance cruiser division of the 14th annual Cape-to-Cape Challenge Aug. 5-6. Buoy races took place in front of the yacht club in Delaware Bay Aug. 5, and the 20 boats from Lewes and Corinthian Yacht Club of Cape May, N.J., took off early Aug. 6 to race across the bay from Lewes to Cape May. Corinthian was host of this year’s event, with LYC hosting the 2023 regatta.

In the performance cruiser division, LYC boat Mahal, captained by John Nelson, took the championship to win the regatta cup. LYC boats took five of the next six spots: 2. Delilah, captained by Heath Gehrke; 3. Going Green, Dave Cerney; 5. Iris, Hattie Warwick-Smith; 6. Shredder, Nate Landis; and 7. Osprey, T.J. Thomas.

Finishing places were determined by points from races on both days. LYC boat Legacy, captained by Nick Carter, one of the event founders, took top honors as the first boat to cross the bay.

Legacy finished fifth in the racer cruiser division, followed by Balance, captained by Richard Beebe, in sixth place. LYC boat Leopolis, captained by Askold Sandarsky, finished third in the the non-spinnaker division.

The overall winner in the racer cruiser division was Corinthian boat Goofy Foot, captained by John Wilsey.
