Lewes Good Friday Cross Walk celebrates Christian faith

April 15, 2023

The Lewes Community Cross Walk, sponsored by the churches of Lewes, took place on Good Friday, April 7, with 14 stops around town.

Starting at Bethel United Methodist Church on West Fourth Street, participants heard scripture selections read at each site and joined in singing hymn verses. About 40 people shared Christian faith and fellowship during this annual event. The walk ended at Bethel Cemetery on Savannah Road.

The Rev. Jim Penuel, pastor of Bethel United Methodist Church, shared cross-carrying duties with other clergy and volunteers from among the walk attendees.

Prayer stops included St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Lewes Presbyterian Church, 1812 Memorial Park, Lewes City Hall, the Zwaanendael Museum, and St. George African Methodist Episcopal Church, whose pastor, the Rev. Dr. Deborah McCaffity, also took part in the walk. Members of the group took turns carrying the cross between stops and reading scriptures from the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. At each stop, attendees also sang a verse from a selection of familiar Good Friday hymns.

“This was my first year to participate in the Community Cross Walk,” said Wesley Paulson, a local resident and recently retired executive director of Clear Space Theatre in Rehoboth Beach. “For me, the experience brought a new perspective to an important event in the history of civilization and the life of the church. I found the cross walk to be very meaningful as I listened to the traditional Good Friday story read in familiar outdoor settings around Lewes.”
