Lewes library to host history and antiquarian book sale Sept. 24-25

September 15, 2021

The Friends of the Lewes Public Library will hold a book sale featuring history volumes, and rare and collectible items from 4 to 6 p.m., Friday, Sept. 24, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 25, at the library, 111 Adams Ave., Lewes. More than 1,500 books on history and politics as well as old, unusual or rare books, some dating back to the mid-1800s, will be available at prices starting at just $3. Credit cards will be accepted for purchases of $10 or more.

The History Book Sale will include books covering American history (Civil War, World War I, World War II, and Vietnam War), Russian history (including Soviet military), Chinese history, and biographies of important people in U.S. and international history (presidents, military figures and others).

Because the library has accumulated so many antiquarian books, they are being priced aggressively at 30 to 65 percent below Amazon and/or Bookfinder.com prices. Available books include children’s, science, home and garden, local interest, biography, history, religion and fiction. The items will be sorted by category and protected by acid-free clear bags. Approximately 95 percent of the books are hardback.

“Our volunteers are still making amazing discoveries as they go through the donations,” said Candace Vessella, Friends of the Lewes Public Library board president. “Collectors will find some real treasures, and at prices well below market value.” She said people in the Lewes area really appreciate books and tend to hold onto their favorites, but as residents downsize or books get left to estates, people look for a place to donate them where they’ll make a difference, and they naturally think of the library, where a book they no longer want can help raise money to support library services. “We’re delighted to pass these wonderful books on to people who will appreciate them and, in the process, raise much-needed funds for our library.”

Everyone participating in this book sale must wear a mask. Given new evidence on the COVID-19 Delta variant, CDC has updated the guidance for fully vaccinated people and recommends universal indoor masking for all, regardless of vaccination status.

Admission to the Lewes Library History and Antiquarian Book Sale is free. Sale proceeds will benefit the Friends of the Lewes Public Library, a separate 501c(3) affiliate of contributing members who support the Lewes Public Library. Proceeds will be used for book and media purchases, library programming, special projects, and other library needs. For more information on the book sale or any library programs, call the library at 302-645-2733 during business hours or visit lewes.lib.de.us.
