Lewes library hosts Cape High educator for author event

Michael Kardos releases fourth novel, “Fun City Heist”
January 7, 2026

Cape Henlopen High School English teacher Dr. Michael Kardos has published his fourth novel, “Fun City Heist,” and the Lewes Public Library recently hosted him for a discussion of the new book.

While showcasing Kardos’ growth as a novelist, the new book continues his tradition of crafting compelling stories rooted in familiar regional settings.

The inspiration for “Fun City Heist” dates back more than two decades. In 2001, Kardos wrote a band breakup scene for a short story that never fully materialized. That spark remained with him, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, he returned to the idea and began developing it into what would become “Fun City Heist.”

A former professional musician, Kardos brings his creative background and storytelling experience into his writing. While the novel is set in New Jersey, it also includes subtle nods and influences inspired by Rehoboth. “Fun City Heist” has been recognized in a full-spread feature in Publishers Weekly, highlighting its impact and reach within the literary community.

Kardos credits his experiences as a writer with strengthening his work in the classroom. “We’re all struggling with the same writing issues: how to start, how to end, how to make a piece of writing interesting, how to see it through. The main difference is I’ve been doing it longer,” said Kardos. “I want my students to understand that good writing doesn’t come all at once, and definitely not from having all the answers, but from trusting the process and sticking with it even when it’s uncomfortable.”

Kardos said his favorite parts of the writing process include reading from his work, experiencing a strong writing session and holding the finished book for the first time. Conversely, he notes that the most challenging part of writing is starting something new. “Every time you begin a new project, it feels like you don’t know how to write at all,” said Kardos. “You never feel like you know what you’re doing when you start, but that’s part of the process.”

The Cape district team is proud to recognize Kardos’ continued success as both an educator and an author. His work serves as an inspiration to students, demonstrating the power of creativity, perseverance and storytelling. In addition to his novels, Kardos is also the author of “The Art & Craft of Fiction: A Writers Guide.”
