For those not familiar with Loving Day, it is the celebration of the historic U.S. Supreme Court decision Loving v. Virginia, which legalized interracial marriage. It all began in 1958 when Richard and Mildred Loving were arrested and sentenced to prison for being an interracial couple in Virginia. It wasn’t until June 12, 1967, that the court struck down all state laws forbidding interracial marriage and transracially adopted children in the U.S. Delaware was one of the last 11 states to decriminalize interracial marriage as a direct result of this decision.
However, thanks to the efforts and prime sponsorship by Sen. Russ Huxtable, Delaware will officially recognize June 12 as Loving Day for the second time in state history.
So come out to the new playground in Canalfront Park in Lewes to celebrate the triumph of love over prejudice, and promote understanding and acceptance of interracial, multicultural families.
This will be a simple reading of the Senate resolution, rain or shine, at 6 p.m. as a celebration of the day, and provide an opportunity for children to enjoy the company of other children playing on the beautiful new playground in an atmosphere of love, unity and inclusion. Attendees may bring chairs, blankets and a picnic dinner if desired.
