Sussex County native Republican Lisa Hudson Briggs of Georgetown is in a three-way race for the Sussex County Council District 2 seat.

In the Sept. 15 Republican primary, she will face off against Cindy Green of Greenwood and Robert Wilson of Georgetown, the son of current Councilman Sam Wilson, who is retiring after serving 12 years.

Briggs ran unsuccessfully against Sam Wilson in the 2016 election.

Briggs is a retired state government worker who spent more than 32 years of service working at Delaware’s Health & Social Services Department; for the last 15 years, she was with the Department of Elections for Sussex County as office supervisor.

“Voters deserve a clear choice this year. As a public servant, I want to call on my experience to bring much-needed improvement in the way county government serves the citizens of Sussex County. We’re facing real issues in Sussex County that deserve the full-time commitment I’ll bring to this job,” she said.

“I have roots in the county; I want to ensure that our children and grandchildren have a quality of life that I have experienced. I want to ensure the traditions that have made Sussex County an amazing place for our families and small businesses to thrive over the years will continue,” Briggs added.

In the past four years, Briggs has attended numerous county council meetings, budget hearings and other events so she could gain a better understanding of council’s workings.

“For all of the economic growth we’ve witnessed in Sussex County over the last few years, we need to recognize that there are real issues, such as the drug epidemic that is destroying Sussex families. The pandemic has showed us the lack of broadband/internet in Sussex County is not acceptable, and we need it fixed and now. Education of our youth, our businesses depend on a good-quality infrastructure that cannot be ignored,” she said.

“I intend to be a voice for the values of our communities that simply cannot be forgotten as our neighborhoods continue to grow and evolve over the next few years,” Briggs said. “I am able to dedicate my time to Sussex County because of my understanding for our community; most of my work was listening to the public and solving the problems.”

Briggs said she is very familiar with issues faced by farmers. She and her husband lived on the family farm outside Georgetown for several years and even operated a produce stand along Route 9. The land is now Sports at the Beach.

She said her three goals on council would be: Planned growth equals jobs; protecting the environment and preserving the Sussex County way of life; and working with the Delaware Department of Transportation.

Briggs served as a certified ambulance attendant in Millsboro in the early 1990s, is a past president of the Sussex Central Field Hockey Boosters and was an officer in the North Elementary School PTO. She is a member of Georgetown Historical Society, a member of VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 7422 and a member of the Sussex County Women’s Republican Club.

Born and raised in Millsboro, Briggs, 56, has four grown children and 10 grandchildren. She graduated from Sussex Central Senior High School. Her husband, Lewis Briggs, a retired Delaware State Police trooper, is active in Republican politics and is a Georgetown-area realtor. Her sister-in-law is Rep. Ruth Briggs King of Georgetown.

District 2 includes the communities and areas near Ellendale, Georgetown, Greenwood, Lincoln, Milford and Millsboro.
