Local athletes shine at powerlifting state championship

November 28, 2025

Seven local athletes representing Rehoboth Beach Barbell Club competed in the USA Powerlifting Delaware State Championship Nov. 15, demonstrating that strength, resilience and community support have no age limit.

With a median age of 48, the team included participants overcoming spinal stenosis, hysterectomy recovery, double knee replacement, hearing loss and traumatic brain injuries, along with two new mothers who are balancing training with caring for infants.

Their performances are a testament to what happens when a group of friends decides to lift each other up – literally and figuratively. Strength grows fast in an environment built on encouragement, accountability and genuine connection.

Competing athletes included Steven White, 72, who achieved a 405 kg total, set two new state records, earned first place in his division and secured an invitation to the 2026 Masters National Championship.

Nancy Jaywork, 69, lifted a 167.5 kg total and achieved personal bests on both the bench press and deadlift. Christy Dorman, 53, recorded a 140 kg total, earning first place in her division. Lori Solovey, 47, lifted a 140 kg total, set a new state record in the deadlift and placed first in her division.

Julie Cullen, 40, lifted a 362.5 kg total, set three new state records, earned first place in her division and secured an invitation to the 2026 Masters National Championship.
