Local author to sign memoir at Browseabout Books Oct. 6
Local author R. Kevin Mallinson, PhD, will be signing copies of his recent book, "Alarm in the Firehouse: A Memoir of America's First Openly Gay Professional Firefighter," from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 6, at Browseabout Books, 133 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach.
A retired professor, Mallinson is known for his many years of HIV work in Sub-Saharan Africa.
“Alarm in the Firehouse” is his first memoir, an honest story of his experience as an openly gay man in the Key West Fire Department from 1981-85. Mallinson became the target of fierce and unrelenting homophobic assaults intended to force him out of the department.
Against a backdrop of the emerging AIDS epidemic, he relays an inspirational narrative of conflict, resilience and triumph. Mallinson contemplates the nature of masculinity and urges that readers reconsider what it means to be one of “America’s bravest.”
Mallinson lives with his husband in Lewes.
