Local Girl Scouts return from European adventure

July 13, 2019

Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay Older Girl Travel Adventure Group recently returned from 10 days in London and Paris.

The girls, who have been working toward this trip for the past three years, explored London and Paris with their group leaders, Janet Maher and Lynette Klopp.

To raise funds for the trip, the girls sold thousands of boxes of cookies. They also catered lunches at camp events, worked part-time summer jobs and moved their crazy pink flamingo flock around town during the past two summers.

While in London, the girls visited Pax Lodge, a World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts center for friendship, and participated in a special pinning ceremony. They rode the London Eye, toured the Globe Theatre and attended a performance of “The Merry Wives of Windsor,” as groundlings at The Globe.

In Paris, they had a guided tour of the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre museum, a perfume factory, and the Palace of Versailles. They explored the left bank with a visit to the Shakespeare and Company bookstore, made famous by Woody Allens's “Midnight in Paris,” and enjoyed a little shopping on the Champs-Elysees. Their final day in Paris was spent just being kids at Disneyland Paris.

In preparation for their trip, the girls participated in a travel journal workshop by Denise Clemons and a photography workshop by Ron MacArthur of the Cape Gazette. The girls also learned about safety while traveling, how to pack light and be a responsible traveler, as well as about the history and culture of the countries they visited. They also learned a few key French phrases so they could be polite travelers, including how not to order the escargot, unless they wanted snails.

GSCB Travel Group is open to any registered Girl Scout in the Chesapeake Bay Council. Girls can join as part of their troop, with a few friends or by themselves. While remaining a part of their troop, they also have the opportunity to travel with other Girl Scouts to destinations such as London, Paris, Switzerland, Italy, Africa, Greece and more.

The travel group takes international trips in odd years. The next will take place in 2021 with a 15-day adventure to London, Paris, Switzerland and Italy. Girls can join the group as far out as three years before travel in order to earn money toward the cost of the trip. Girls must be 14 at the time of travel to participate. For more information, contact Janet Maher, volunteer group leader, at 302-258-3327 or Sue Rowe, girl program director, at srowe@cbgsc.org.
