Local letter carriers drive to Stamp Out Hunger

Among the pallets of flyers and cubbies of letters at the U.S. Postal Service’s Rehoboth Beach Carrier Annex May 10 were bins of food.
The collection was the result of the annual USPS Stamp Out Hunger food drive.
That day, carriers on 54 routes across eastern Sussex County picked up food donated by residents and businesses. It is all destined for area food banks.
“It always makes me a little emotional, but also excited to see the community come together to take care of people in need,” said Dionne Watts, postmaster at the annex.
Carriers have collected about 2 billion pounds of food nationwide for more than 30 years of Stamp Out Hunger.
Watts said once the carriers started bringing in the donations, the nonprofits started coming to the annex to pick them up.
“We set up in the parking lot, and as the food comes in, it’s going out,” Watts said.
She said groups that benefited from this year’s drive include the Community Resource Center, Epworth United Methodist Church, the Shepherd’s Office, the Milton Community Food Pantry and the Food Bank of Delaware.
