Long before 2 Dips, there was the Lewes Beach Garage

February 15, 2022

The future of Lewes Beach’s beloved 2 Dips ice cream shop is uncertain after a local development team has proposed to build 12 condominiums on the East Savannah Road property.

Rick Quill of White Bucks LLC says he’d like for 2 Dips to continue to operate in a commercial unit on the site. As part of Quill’s plan, a portion of the original building and much of its unique character would remain, with condos built on top of it.

The building has a long history on Lewes Beach. It dates back to at least the 1920s, when it was known as the Lewes Beach Garage.

The Wagner family purchased the building in 1962, when Don Wagner Sr. opened the Boatel to store boats. He later sold and repaired sailboats, and switched the name to New Happy Holiday Boat Sales.

Don Wagner Jr., with his daughters Jan and Chelsey, opened 2 Dips in 2010. Although there were three other ice cream shops in town, they’ve proven that you can’t have too much of a good thing.
