Louise Cummings will be the featured speaker at the annual Governor's Prayer Breakfast at 7 a.m., Thursday, May 3, at the Modern Maturity Center in Dover. This year's theme is Everyday Heroes: Neighbors Helping Neighbors.

Following the death of Cummings' husband, Delaware State Police Cpl. Stephen Ballard, in the line of duty in 2017, she started Ballard's Reading Buddies in partnership with the United Way of Delaware. The program goal is to improve literacy and instill a love of reading in young children.

Cummings has dedicated her life to helping others succeed despite the hardships one may face. She cares deeply about empowering children, quality education and community service.

Cummings' diverse career ranges from working as an attorney in corporate and finance departments and leading organizations as a vice president, to owning her own law group and consulting company. She was appointed by Gov. John Carney in 2017 to serve as chair of the Delaware Women's Workforce Council. She also serves on the board of trustees for the Rivers School in Massachusetts.

Carney will join Lt. Gov. Bethany Hall-Long, elected officials, religious leaders and community members at the 58th Annual Delaware Governor's Prayer Breakfast. Gov. J. Caleb Boggs initiated the tradition of the Governor's Prayer Breakfast as he ended his second term, and it was embraced by succeeding chief executives.

Hundreds of attendees are expected to gather at Dover's Modern Maturity Center for the annual event to pray for the nation, state and local communities. The prayer breakfast provides Delawareans a time to reflect on how to personally serve their state in the upcoming year. Attendees gather and share a renewed commitment to their individual faith and come together to make Delaware a better place.

Individual tickets are $25, or a table of 10 may be reserved for $250. The deadline to purchase tickets is Wednesday, April 25; to order tickets, go to www.eventbrite.com/e/governors-prayer-breakfast-2018-tickets-44187135913.
