October 20, 2025

The LEAD IDEA Center recently announced Equetta Jones, principal of Love Creek Elementary School, as one of only 16 professionals nationwide selected to serve as a Leader in the Field, a distinguished recognition for exceptional leaders advancing special education and early intervention.

The Leaders in the Field community represents a diverse group of administrators including special education directors, principals, early intervention directors and supervisors of exceptional education from across the United States. Together, they collaborate with LEAD IDEA Center staff to strengthen leadership practices and advance implementation of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.

“We are incredibly proud of Principal Jones’ recognition,” said Dr. Audrey Dempsey, supervisor of elementary education and early learning for the Cape Henlopen School District. “Having one of our own selected as a national Leader in the Field ensures that the voices and experiences from our schools are represented at the highest levels. This opportunity not only bridges the gap between research and practice, but also strengthens our ability to meet the real-time needs of students with disabilities and the educators who serve them.”

As a Leader in the Field, Jones will provide insights and feedback that shape national efforts to improve services and outcomes for children with disabilities and their families.

“I am honored to be selected as a Leader in the Field,” said Jones. “This opportunity allows me to collaborate with leaders across the country and contribute to advancing equity, access and high-quality support for students with disabilities.”

The initiative highlights the importance of leadership in driving meaningful change in schools and early intervention programs, ensuring that children with disabilities receive the support they need to thrive.
