Magnolia mayor chastises restaurant plan

November 8, 2022

With open space in Delaware rapidly disappearing, particularly in Sussex County, I believe it’s unconscionable that anyone would attempt to commercialize part of Cape Henlopen State Park with a restaurant. I currently serve as mayor of the Town of Magnolia, and, while I own a second home in Lewes near the park, I can tell you I’d fight tooth and nail to prevent such a travesty from happening in my jurisdiction on government open space meant for the benefit of all.

I’m sure you’ve already been made aware of prior legislation and rulings that strongly suggest that this proposal is illegal, but worse, by doing this project, you will also lower the bar for any subsequent ridiculous proposals in the future. What’s next? A Burger King on Legislative Mall in Dover? An IHOP at John Dickinson Plantation? Funland II at the Cape?

It’s particularly ironic, while right next door in Lewes, a proposal is taking shape with the Great Marsh Park concept plan, which is attempting to prevent development of a huge tract of land and preserve it for the use of residents and visitors. So, which direction are we really going in here, folks?
