Make a Turk's-Head Knot bracelet May 14

May 3, 2011

Staff from the Delaware Seashore State Park will offer a class in making Turk's-Head Knot bracelets from 10  to 11:30 a.m., Saturday, May 14.

Also known as sailors’ bracelets or surfers’ bracelets, Turk's-Head Knots are woven rope bracelets worn by mariners for ages, including the surfmen of the U.S. Life-Saving Service. If a sailor or surfman found himself pitched into the water accidentally, a rescuer could grab such a bracelet with a boat hook and haul the unfortunate person to safety.

Staff will provide the rope and instruction for participants to make their own. The Indian River Life-Saving Station Museum is  south of Dewey Beach and north of the Indian River Inlet in Delaware Seashore State Park on Route 1.

The program fee is $7.50 per person and covers both materials and instruction. Space and materials are limited, so preregistration is required. To register for this and other programs at the Indian River Life-Saving Station Museum,  call 302-227-6991.
