Marie Elizabeth Melvin, owned package store

October 21, 2021

Marie Elizabeth Melvin, 91, of Georgetown was born to the late Lena Sparrow-Harmon and Elwood Marshall Dec. 6, 1929, at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford. She departed this life Friday, Oct. 15, 2021.
Marie attended Richard Allen School in Georgetown. She was immensely proud of the school and its history. She loved telling stories about the “old days,” and how she grew up in what seemed like a different time. At her time of passing, she was an honoree with the Richard Allen Coalition for her dedication, attributes, and knowledge of her community.
On March 23, 1959, Marie married the love of her life, James E. Melvin. During this union, the couple raised five children. They shared beautiful memories and were married for 55 years.
Marie worked many jobs as a laborer and a housekeeper. She will be most remembered for her co-ownership of The Double D Tavern package store and bar located in the heart of Georgetown. People traveled from near and far to get her famous pork chop sandwiches and spareribs.
Marie was a lifetime member at Prospect AME Church inGeorgetown, under the leadership of the Rev. Janet Maull-Martin. She served on the usher board and loved attending special services. Though Marie loved the Lord, she also loved the lottery, and was a familiar face at her local Bodies. She enjoyed watching westerns, her daytime stories, eating ice cream, horse racing, and alcoholic beverages. Marie loved to attend family reunions and dance, although she could not.
Some things are sure, and some things are certain: You never had to guess what she was thinking because she had no problem telling you.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Melvin; daughter, Barbara Ingram; sisters, Alice Trott, Lula Marshall and Lillie Marshall; brothers, Fred Cannon, Charles Harmon and Amos Marshall.
Marie leaves to cherish her fond and precious memories: two sons, Melvin Jones of Millsboro and Darrell Melvin (Deborah) Milton; two daughters, Lena Melvin and LaSalle (Andrew), both of Lewes, and Alvata Melvin of Desoto, Texas; three adopted sons, Brodes Mason Sr. (Lola) of Millsboro, Michael Gibbs of Georgetown and Kurt Simms (Lillian) of Richmond, Va.; and one adopted daughter, Wanda Hutchins of Millsboro. Marie also had 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren; a goddaughter, Angie Benson; brother-in-law, Willie McKeithan; and sister-in-law Lizzie Cannon of Bridgeville; and two devoted friends, Evelyn Ingram and Clara Ingram, both of Georgetown. In addition, her eternal spirit will always be remembered by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A funeral service was held Sunday, Oct. 24 at St. John 2nd Baptist Church in Millsboro.
