The MAX Challenge of Lewes has been changing people’s lives physically and emotionally since its doors opened a year ago. Now, owners Jerry and Robin Carmody want to offer inspiration for their clients and the community by hosting two MAX Day of Giving events, both aimed at raising funds for Surfgimp Foundation.

“In the case of our members, it might not always be a physical barrier, but rather on an emotional level,” said Robin. “We help them to start believing in themselves and guide them on their journey from ‘I can't’ to ‘I did.’”

The first event is an evening with Scott Chesney, a motivational speaker who is paralyzed yet spreads his message across the world. Robin said Chesney's message is about breaking through barriers and going from impossible to I’m possible. This event will take place Saturday, April 6, at Love Creek Elementary School.

Jerry said a few months ago, the couple saw Chesney speak, and his message was powerful. That event inspired the day of giving, and they wanted to include Chesney in some way, he said.

The second event will be a Sweat for Surfgimp sample class at 8 a.m., Saturday, April 13. In addition to the two events, MAX Day of Giving T-shirts are available for $12.

Robin said she and Jerry chose Surfgimp Foundation as its charity because there’s a similar mission between the two – helping people overcome obstacles that prevent them from achieving their goals.

Surfgimp's message of perseverance was a natural fit for the MAX Challenge, said Jerry.

Melanie Liesener, foundation board member and widow of Surfgimp Jay Liesener, said events like this help the foundation continue its mission. Surfgimp Foundation provides grants for people with disabilities who, like former Milton resident and quadriplegic surfer Jay Liesener, want to experience their dreams, as Liesener did before his death.

“The Surfgimp Foundation is extremely grateful to be the recipient of the proceeds of the MAX Challenge of Lewes' Day of Giving events,” said Liesener. “We could not accomplish our mission without the help of caring community members.”

Liesener said donations will be used to fund the foundation’s 2019 grant cycle.

The Scott Chesney event takes place at 6 p.m., Saturday, April 6, in Love Creek Elementary School. There is no charge, but there is a suggested donation of $10 per person to Surfgimp Foundation. Donations will be accepted that evening.

Robin said it is highly recommended that attendees reserve for this event because seating is limited. For reservations, go to eventbrite.com or the Facebook page of the MAX Challenge of Lewes.

The Sweat for Surfgimp sample class takes place at the MAX Challenge of Lewes, 17437 Ocean One Plaza, Suite 2, Lewes. There is a charge of $10, payable in cash or by check made out to Surfgimp Foundation.
