September 29, 2019

Insight Meditation Community of Lewes will welcome returning meditation teacher Luisa Montero for an evening dharma talk and a full-day meditation retreat with the theme of The Healing Balm of Compassion.

The dharma talk of Buddhist teachings, along with discussion and refreshments, will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 4, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church parish hall.

A full-day retreat will be held from 9 a.m. to 4  p.m., Saturday, Oct. 5, at St. Peter’s parish hall. A dharma talk, sitting and walking meditation, and lunch are included. If attendees can and would like to, they may bring a dish to share.

Non, beginning and experienced meditators are all welcome to attend this weekend of meditation and discussion.

Montero has been practicing Vipassana meditation since 1987 and teaching meditation since 1993. She completed the three-year Community Dharma Leadership program sponsored by the Spirit Rock Meditation Center. Montero currently teaches a weekly meditation class in Takoma Park, Md., and leads daylong and weekend retreats in the Washington, D.C. area.

The suggested donation is $10 for Friday’s talk and $45 for the Saturday retreat, which includes lunch. For those with limited income, 50 percent, or any amount of the suggested donation offered is welcome. If budget does not allow for a donation, simply show up; no explanation is needed.

Montero said, “Kindness and compassion are not fixed traits that we either have or don’t have. They are states that can be developed and strengthened. In view of the challenges we face today, personal and societal, this is great news. When we practice being mindful, kind to ourselves, and recognize our shared humanity, compassion for and connection with others can flow easily. Through the practice of mindfulness meditation, on and off the cushion, we discover and cultivate the inherent human tendencies toward connection and kindheartedness for ourselves and others.”

Saint Peter's Episcopal Church parish hall is at 211 Mulberry St. near Second Street in Lewes. For more information, email info@imclewes.org or go to www.IMC-Lewes.org.
