Memorial scholarship awarded to Isabella Leishear

June 5, 2019

In a ceremony held at the Lewes Public Library, Isabella Leishear received the 2019 Christopher J. Smail Memorial Scholarship.

A Cape Henlopen High School senior, Leishear will be attending the University of Delaware in the fall. She is the founder and president of CAPE for Tomorrow – Compassion for Animals and Protecting the Environment - whose mission is to provide support, awareness, and knowledge of vegan and vegetarian diets, ending animal cruelty, and other related rights. She is also secretary of the National Honor Society.

The Christopher J. Smail Memorial Scholarship is a one-time, $1,000 grant designed to encourage higher education study by helping to defray college expenses.

Karen Smail, the mother of Christopher Smail, a 2010 graduate of Cape Henlopen High School and former recipient of the scholarship, presented Isabella with the award. The scholarship was re-named in Christopher’s honor after he died in an automobile crash in November 2011.
