Millsboro Police Department holds annual banquet

The Millsboro Police Department held its annual awards banquet Oct. 16. Mayor John Thorogood, Rep. Rich Collins, R-Millsboro, and Town Manager Sheldon Hudson were all on hand to present awards.

Lt. Robert Legates was named Officer of the Year, which was the highest award presented that evening. Chief Brian Calloway said, “Lt. Legates has maintained our CALEA standards over the past year and has laid a solid foundation for the new Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence investigation division. I valued his support to and his guidance within the department. He definitely makes my job much easier.” Collins presented a Delaware House of Representatives certificate of recognition for Legates’ efforts. Legates was recognized for receiving 23 commendations from citizens over the course of his career.

Lifesaving awards were presented to PFC Michael Gorman, Ptlm. Dallas Millner, Ptlm. Christopher Ebke, Lt. Robert Legates, Ptlm. Liana Dodson, Sgt. David Moyer, Ptlm. Kyle Wharton and Cpl. Seth Bullock. All lifesaving awards were the result of officers administering Naxolone to subjects who had overdosed. 

Calloway, who was recognized for 20 years of service, has been a patrol officer, supervisor, school resource officer, CALEA manager and assistant chief. He became chief in January 2016.

Sgt. Barry Wheatley was recognized for receiving 21 commendations from citizens over the course of his career; Sgt. Patrick Forester for receiving 16 citizen commendations; and Sgt. Evan Rogers and PFC Joseph Mulhern for receiving five citizen commendations. Ptlm. Dallas Millner received a performance commendation recommended by his patrol sergeant for his safety efforts including DUI enforcement, and PFC Joseph Mulhern received a performance commendation recommended by his patrol sergeant for his efforts in keeping the community safe.

Cpl. Matthew Dufour received a certificate of appreciation for his service to the criminal investigation division for the last three years. He returned to patrol operations as of November. Sgt. David Moyer was awarded the Exceptional Performance Commendation for his efforts in drug enforcement over the past year. He seized more than $18,000 in suspected drug proceeds, which was later used to fund an updated camera system in the same development in which it was seized. The Delaware House of Representatives also issued a certificate of recognition in regard to Moyer’s efforts. Rep. Rich Collins presented the certificate to Moyer.

Chief Calloway also presented members of Grace United Methodist Church with a Chief’s Commendation for their partnership with the department for its annual Whiskers for Wishes event to raise money for needy families during Christmas.
