Downtown Milton now has its first mural, thanks to a grassroots effort among business owners, local artists and other community members.
The mural, designed by Rogers Sign Company of Milton, is a 30-by-18-foot display on the side of Irish Eyes Pub & Restaurant on Union Street that illustrates the town's history as a shipbuilding town and the home of five governors, established in 1807.
In the center of the mural is the Thomas Winsmore schooner, a ship built a short distance downstream from Irish Eyes in 1891, at the former location of Wilson's Marina on Front Street, said local historian Russ McCabe.
Funds for the nearly $14,000 mural were provided by community members, businesses and organizations, including the Division of the Arts, the Town of Milton and the Milton Community Foundation among many others.
