More than 1,200 participate in DE-Feet Breast Cancer 5K

June 7, 2012

A crowd of more than 1,200 people came to Tanger Outlets in Rehoboth May 20 for the Third Annual DE-feet Breast Cancer 5K Run/Walk. This event, hosted by the Tanger Outlet Center and produced by Seashore Striders Event Productions Inc., raised more than $55,000, which will benefit the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition and its programs and services in Delaware and the surrounding communities. Last year’s run/walk had 1,100 registered participants, setting a record for second annual events produced by Seashore Striders.

The family-friendly event was open to participants of all ages and abilities. The event included a 5K timed race, a 5K untimed walk and a 1-Mile Fun Walk. A pre-event ceremony included a Survivor Celebration to honor all breast cancer survivors and also remember those who have lost their battle with the disease.

Andrew Thivierge, 26, of Towson, Md., was first to cross the finish line for the 5K race with a time of 18:02; Mike Sewell, 43, of Camden finished second in 18:35; and Anthony Romans, 27, of Harbeson was third  in 19:08. The top three women were Logan Shuttleworth, 12, of Lewes in 21:11; Karen Sposato, 43, of Milton in 22:27; and Mel McCloy, 12, of Lewes, in 22:32.

Meanwhile, a sea of pink-clad walkers participated in the 5K walk that followed the Junction and Breakwater Trail in Cape Henlopen State Park. Some participants made custom T-shirts to remember or honor those who have been impacted by breast cancer.

Awards were presented to the overall champions and the top three finishers in each age category. DBCC also presented awards to the top fundraisers (team and individual), and for largest team, team spirit and best costume.
