May 9, 2016

La Esperanza sponsored a screening of "The Blind Side" at the Movies at the Riverfront Theater in Milford. The organization provides support, advocacy and services to assist in the assimilation and advancement of Hispanic communities. The movie night was a part of La Esperanza’s Prevention Works! drug and alcohol prevention program aimed at youth in the community.

Milford Second Street Players presents $5 Movies at the Riverfront Theater one weekend a month. Friday nights the soundtrack is in Spanish, Saturday nights in English. Movies at the Riverfront Theater received a generous donation from i.g. Burton to help them expand their outreach to Hispanic communities. Charlie Burton, who is also board president at La Esperanza, suggested that MaRT reach out to these programs.

A large group of happy and excited La Esperanza clients including parents, adolescents and children arrived April 22 to see "The Blind Side," an Oscar-winning film starring Sandra Bullock, Tim McGraw and Quinton Aaron who played Michael Oher. This fun and heartwarming film tells the story of homeless and traumatized young man who, with the help of a caring woman and her family, became an All-American football player and the first-round NFL draft pick for the Baltimore Ravens.

As part of the Classic Movies Night series, MaRT is showing "The House on Telegraph Hill" at 7:30 p.m. in Spanish Friday, May 20 and in English May 21. The suspenseful film noir set in San Francisco is about concentration camp survivor Victoria Kowelska who finds herself involved in mystery, greed and murder when she assumes the identity of a dead friend in order to gain passage to America. Admission is $5. The theater is at 2 South Walnut St., Milford. Doors open at 7 p.m. and tickets are available at the door.
