National Theatre Live to screen ‘King Lear’

August 24, 2023

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society will present National Theatre Live’s production of “King Lear” at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 30, and 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 2, at the Cinema Art Theater in Lewes.

National Theatre Live presents plays from London’s West End. Considered by many to be the greatest tragedy ever written, “King Lear” sees two aging fathers – one a king, one his courtier – reject the children who truly love them. Their blindness unleashes a tornado of pitiless ambition and treachery, as family and state are plunged into a violent power struggle with bitter ends.

Jonathon Munby directs Ian McKellan in this nuanced and powerful contemporary retelling of Shakespeare’s tender, violent, moving and shocking play.

Admission is $20 for members, $25 for general audiences, $22 for seniors and $5 for students, with student tickets available only at the theater box office, 17701 Dartmouth Drive, Lewes. All other tickets may be purchased at the box office or at rehobothfilm.com.
