New section of Canary Creek trail to open
The Lewes Greenways & Trails Committee will be celebrating National Trails Day at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 5, by formally opening another section of the Canary Creek trail.
This year, the committee will be recognizing and thanking community residents Jim Sleasman of Pilottown Village and Linda and Dennis Davison of Reserves at Pilottown for their efforts in helping with the establishment and maintenance of the Canary Creek trail.
In addition, committee members will be offering escorted walks of the trail as well as working to clear the brush, trees and vegetation from an area that will eventually connect the two sections of the trail.
Last year the committee and interested volunteers built a footbridge across a tax ditch between the two communities in order to extend the trail to the upland wooded area adjacent to New Road. During the past year, the committee has continued working on the trail extension, clearing areas of thick phragmites and brush in order to provide views of the creek and marshland.
This latest addition to the original 1.5 mile walking trail located behind Pilottown Village is relatively short - only .4 miles - and runs behind the Reserves at Pilottown.
The beginning point for the new section of the trail is located on Seagull Drive near the entrance sign to Pilottown Village.
The easiest way to reach the site is from New Road by turning at the Forecastle Lane entrance to the Reserves and then turning right on Lightship Lane and with a final left turn onto Seagull Drive. Those planning to attend this event should wear long pants, long-sleeved shirts or jackets, head coverings and sturdy walking shoes. Anyone helping with the brush clearing should bring clippers, work gloves and bug spray.
