Newark man charged with DUI after driving vehicle into surf

Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control officers arrested Donald R. Quill Jr., 48, of Newark, for driving under the influence and additional traffic violations Sept. 8, after he drove his vehicle into the ocean at Cape Henlopen State Park’s Navy Beach.

Officers responded to a report of a water rescue in progress at approximately 7:20 p.m. Witnesses called 911 after seeing a vehicle driven into the surf. Bystanders quickly entered the water and helped the driver from the vehicle and onto shore.

During the investigation, officers observed Quill displaying signs of impairment. He was transported to Rehoboth Beach Police Department, where he was charged with misdemeanor DUI, as well as inattentive driving and operating a motor vehicle on closed Delaware State Parks areas.

Quill was video-arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 2 and was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on $1,502 cash bond and issued a no-contact order with all Delaware State Parks.
