Dewey budget committee to meet Aug. 30
The Dewey Beach Budget and Finance Committee will meet at 3:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 30, at the Lifesaving Station, 1 Dagsworthy Ave. Members will review financial results versus budget and possibly vote to recommend new revenue stream opportunities to commissioners.

Rehoboth parking committee to meet Aug. 26
The Rehoboth Beach Parking Advisory Committee has scheduled a meeting for 9 a.m., Monday, Aug. 26, in the commissioners room of city hall, 229 Rehoboth Ave. The agenda calls for continued discussion of parking-related matters. Belhaven Hotel before Rehoboth BoA Aug. 26
Representatives from the proposed Belhaven Hotel, which fronts the Boardwalk and stretches to Wilmington Avenue,  have submitted paperwork to the Rehoboth Beach Board of Adjustment seeking a number of variances. The hearing is scheduled for 5 p.m., Monday, Aug. 26, in the commissioners room of city hall, 229 Rehoboth Ave.

On behalf of property owner John Papapjohn, attorney Hal Dukes is asking for a list of variances from the floor-to-area ratio, including the parking areas, the pool, the second level covered terraces, balconies and the size of its meeting room. Variances are also being requested related to flood damage reduction and the height of architectural embellishments.

The address for the property is 2 Rehoboth Ave.; it is located in the C-1 Commercial District. The property is on lot numbers 2, 4 and 6 on Rehoboth Avenue; lot numbers 3, 5, 7 and part of 9 on Wilmington Avenue; and lot numbers 17 and 18 of Surf Avenue.

Also on the board of adjustment’s agenda is an appeal hearing/request for variance by attorney David Hutt on behalf of Jack Lingo Asset Management. The property in question is 240 Rehoboth Ave., and the appeal/variance request is regarding the number of off-street parking spaces required.

Rehoboth’s CDP survey completion deadline Aug. 30
Rehoboth Beach is in the beginning stages of its state-mandated comprehensive development plan, which is due in 2020. The city is asking citizens to comment by filling out a survey. There are three survey options – community, business and visitor. The survey period closes Friday, Aug. 30.

Surveys can be found at www.cityofrehoboth.com/2020-cdp. For those who prefer to fill the survey out in written format, paper copies are available at city hall, 229 Rehoboth Ave. Everyone is encouraged to participate to help shape the future of the city. Environmental committee created
During a meeting Aug. 16, Rehoboth commissioners voted unanimously in favor of creating a new committee focused on the city’s natural environment. According to a supporting document created by Commissioner Richard Byrne, the purpose of the committee is to energize, inspire and lead the city of Rehoboth Beach to become an eco-friendly, conservation-focused and pristine destination. The expectation is the board will have a chair to nominate for October.

Sussex council off for two weeks
Sussex County Council will not meet Tuesday, Aug. 27, or Tuesday, Sept. 3. The next regularly scheduled meeting is at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 10, in the county administration building, 2 The Circle, Georgetown.

Eastern Sussex Dems to meet Aug. 31
Eastern Sussex Democrats continue to bring meaningful and exciting speakers to southern Delaware.  On Saturday, Aug. 31, they will be hosting a brunch meeting at Irish Eyes, 213 Anglers Road, Lewes, with U.S.  Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester. As in past meetings, there will be an open and interactive Q&A with the guest speaker. The fee for breakfast brunch and meeting for nonmembers is $30; members pay $25. Attendees may also join or renew their membership at this meeting. Prorated dues for the remainder of the year are $15. 
All membership fees go directly to Sussex County Democratic candidates and their campaigns. Register now on www.easternsussexdemocrats.com no later than Friday, Aug. 30. Sign-in at Irish Eyes starts at 9:15 a.m. Meeting and brunch start at 10 a.m. 

Pro Cutz hosting annual back-to-school discount Sept. 2
Pro Cutz Sports Barbershop is hosting its fourth annual back-to-school event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday, Sept. 2. Haircuts start at $5. If a customer brings their report card from the fourth quarter of the 2018/19 school year, $1 will be taken off for an A in core classes. The Delaware State Police Community Unit will be providing backpacks and school supplies. The event is also made possible with help from Hope Realty and Rehoboth Beach Barbell Club. Supplies are limited and haircuts are on a first-come, first-served basis. Light refreshments will be provided.

Rehoboth supports VIA historical markers
It appears Rehoboth Beach will soon be getting two more historical markers. During a meeting Aug. 16, commissioners unanimously supported the Village Improvement Association’s request to have two markers installed – one recognizing the VIA’s installation of the surf safety line and one recognizing the VIA’s purchase and maintenance of the lighthouse now at the entrance of Rehoboth Avenue. Barbara Beatty, VIA Development Committee chair, said the goal is to have the two markers installed by December, when the VIA will have its 110th meeting. The one condition of support from the commissioners was that the VIA would come back for final location approval.

Sussex council awards grants to nonprofits
Sussex County Council awarded the following councilmanic grants during its Aug. 13 meeting: $2,000 to Autism Delaware for its Blue Jean Ball fundraiser; $1,240 to Mason Dixon Woodworkers for its Christmas toy program; $500 to Seaford Elite Travel Football Club; $1,500 to Lewes Public Library for Shakespeare Festival expenses; and $10,000 to Georgetown Historical Society for Marvel Museum building.
