Dewey marketing group meeting cancelled
The Dewey Beach Marketing Committee meeting scheduled for Friday, Oct. 4, has been cancelled.

Critter touch tank returns for Coast Day
Delaware’s coastal and natural resources will be featured from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 6, in DNREC’s Coast Day education tent at the University of Delaware’s College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment, 700 Pilottown Road, Lewes. The popular critter touch tank allows up-close interaction with a variety of sea creatures.

DNREC exhibits with games and giveaways will highlight Delaware’s coastal and natural resources, including: Shoreline and Waterway Management Section’s Dune Sign Contest winners display, floodplain mapping tool, and dredging survey; Delaware Bayshore Initiative’s mini-theater and DuPont Nature Center’s touch tank; DNREC volunteer opportunities at the EcoCafe; The Delaware Shorebird Project; Recycling Program information and sorting activity; Cape Henlopen State Park Nature Center and Fort Miles programs; wetlands conservation activities for the whole family; and Outdoor Delaware magazine.

NASCAR weekend could cause traffic delays Oct. 4-6
The NASCAR Cup Series at Dover International Speedway takes place Friday-Sunday, Oct. 4-6. The Delaware Department of Transportation Management Center, in coordination with City of Dover Police and Delaware State Police, will monitor traffic in and around Dover to ensure safe travel.

On Oct. 6, the speedway’s main entrance on Route 13 will be closed to southbound traffic when speedway parking is filled. When the race is over, Leipsic Road will also be closed to through traffic. Motorists can tune to WTMC 1380 AM and view the variable message board signs surrounding the Dover area. Parking on speedway grounds Oct. 4 and Oct. 5 is free. There is a $10 charge for parking on speedway grounds Oct. 6. Parking areas available include the main entrance lots south, north and west off Route 13, and lot one, off Leipsic Road. Rehoboth commissioner workshop set Oct. 7
Rehoboth Beach commissioners will hold a workshop at 9 a.m., Monday, Oct. 7, in the commissioners room of city hall, 229 Rehoboth Ave. The agenda calls for continued discussion on new signage, administrative variances and the recently passed wireless technology ordinance. It also includes discussions on committee appointments, crosswalks, the Grove Park canal access project and a lease agreement with Verizon to place antennas on the downtown water tower.

Milton Town Council to meet Oct. 7
Milton Town Council will meet at 6:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 7, at Milton library to hold a public hearing on whether to make Manship, Sand, Church, Clifton and Poplar streets into one-way streets. Following the hearing, council will discuss and possibly vote on the measure, which was recommended by the Streets, Sidewalks and Parks Committee.

In new business, council will discuss a request by Jim Hartnett for a sidewalk waiver at 413 Yew St. Council will discuss resolutions to adopt the 2020 fee schedule and to consider a color palette for exterior paint within the historic district. There will also be discussion of job descriptions for accounting clerk, senior accountant and office assistant, and for final land acquisition at 614 Federal St.

Lewes mayor and city council meet Oct. 7
Lewes Mayor and City Council will meet at 6:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 7, at city hall. The group will discuss gross rental receipts tax as it relates to short-term rentals and a possible accommodations tax. Officials will also discuss a right-of-way survey on Lewes Beach, a memorandum of understanding between the city and DelDOT regarding the right of way of the former railroad, and consideration of a fee for zoning verification letters. Milton historic group meets Oct. 8
Milton Historic Preservation Commission will meet at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 8, in Milton library. The commission will discuss a request from Jolynn Esham, 207 Federal St., for a conceptual review of a proposed addition on the rear of the structure. 

SDARJ Oct. 8 topic will be segregated schools
The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice will host Delaware historian Syl Woolford for a town hall meeting at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 8, at Trinity Faith Christian Center, 15516 New Road, Lewes. Woolford will discuss the history of the colored schools in Delaware built by Pierre du Pont, which ties into SDARJ’s initiative to restore the Nassau School in Belltown and convert it to an African-American Museum. Sussex planners approve Spring Arbor
Sussex County Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously gave final site-plan approval for Spring Arbor Rehoboth, a proposed senior community at the intersection of Plantation and Cedar Grove roads. The facility will be 160,000 square feet with 144 units.

In addition, the planners approved a preliminary site plan for Phase 4 of The Vineyards at Nassau Valley in Lewes. Phase 4 consists of an additional 76,000 gross square feet at the Route 9 complex. The previous three phases were all approved by planning and zoning between 2014 and 2017; they included 966 dwelling units, as well as commercial retail spaces.

The proposed Phase 4 includes five retail stores, a gas station and 324 parking spaces. A fifth phase is planned that will include an additional 232 residential units. Planners also approved an updated master plan for The Vineyards to include the new phases, and a clubhouse and pool.

Dewey audit committee to meet Oct. 10
The Dewey Beach Audit Committee will meet at 6 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 10, at the Lifesaving Station, 1 Dagsworthy Ave. Members will discuss and possibly vote to accept the updated draft audit report and supporting documents, and will discuss future procedures for presentation of draft audit reports.

Sussex 911 Awareness Day set Oct. 10
The Sussex County Emergency Operations Center will host its 20th annual 911 Awareness Day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 10, at the public safety complex, 21911 Rudder Lane, near Georgetown, to give the public a behind-the-scenes look at how the facility and first responders serve the community 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

This year’s event will feature a fun day of safety demonstrations and emergency vehicles on display, police K-9s, fire trucks, EMS units, and police units. The event is free and open to the public. This event is sponsored by Sussex County and the Delaware State Police, which jointly operate the 911 center. Sussex Republicans to host dinner Oct. 13
The public can join local legislators and candidates for a beef and dumpling dinner from 12:30 to 4 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 13 at the Delmar VFW, 200 W. State St. The dinner is hosted by Republicans for Sussex.   One of Delaware’s new voting machines will be available; representatives from the election commission will answer questions and demonstrate how the machine works. Cost of the dinner (eat-in or carryout) is $15 for adults, and $10 for children under 12. For ticket information, contact Ron Sams at 302-945-2586.

Cambridge day trip reservations due Oct. 13
The First Town Club of Lewes will host a day trip Wednesday, Oct. 23, to historic Cambridge, Md. Participants will visit the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Museum and the 1760s Meredith House. Lunch will be at the River View at the Point restaurant, with separate checks. The Jor-Lin bus will leave at 8 a.m. from the Lowe’s parking lot in Lewes and return about 5 p.m. The $40 cost includes the bus, driver’s tip, and museum fees. Lunch is not included.

Rehoboth hosting an afternoon of art Oct. 17
Rehoboth Beach City Hall will host an afternoon of art at 1 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 17, at 229 Rehoboth Ave., featuring the Coastal Camera Club, Rehoboth Art League, Bill Wolff’s tree sculpture and a mural by Brett Steeves. A ribbon cutting for the mural will be at 1:30. The public is invited.

The CCC exhibit features members’ works including nature photography, still lifes, abstract images, and landscapes. The RAL members’ showcase includes iconic local scenes such as the Boardwalk, eateries, state parks, and famous landmarks. When the city launched an updated version of its popular tree donation program, local artist Bill Wolff was commissioned to create a tree sculpture for the city hall atrium to publicly recognize donors. The city also partnered with RAL and artist Brett Steeves to create a new mural outside the convention center.
