Coalition plans March for the Park Nov. 13

The newly formed Preserve Our Park Coalition will stage a March for the Park at 11 a.m., Sunday, Nov. 13, to voice its opposition to the proposed restaurant at Cape Henlopen State Park. Participants will line up at the trail across from the Cape May-Lewes Ferry Terminal and then walk to the park and return. The group has filed four Freedom of Information Act requests for additional information and hired an attorney who offered a legal opinion that the proposal is prohibited in the park, said spokesman Jay Tomlinson. The coalition's website is preserveourpark.org.

Dogfish nights benefit shelter village

To raise funds for the Springboard Pallet shelter village project in Georgetown, Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats will host Beer and Benevolence nights from 5 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 9, and Wednesday, Nov. 23, at 320 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach. A portion of sales proceeds will be donated to support the project.

In a partnership among Town of Georgetown officials and nonprofits Springboard Collaborative and First State Community Action Agency, the Pallet village on First State property off North Railroad Avenue began construction Oct. 17, when trucks from the Pallet Co. rolled onto the vacant lot.

Jud Malone, Springboard executive director, will be in attendance both nights with project representatives to make presentations and provide a gift package to be auctioned to customers.

Lewes financials to be discussed Nov. 10

The City of Lewes Finance Committee will meet at 10 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 10, at City Hall.

Amendments to the budget, rental licensing, the Lewes Line, city investments and funding sources to purchase open space will be discussed.

Time has been set aside for public comment.

Lewes City Hall, BPW hours differ Nov. 8-11

Because of Election Day, Return Day and Veterans Day, hours of operation for the City of Lewes and Board of Public works will be altered this week.

City Hall will be closed for Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 8. and Return Day, Thursday, Nov. 10. On Veterans Day, Friday, Nov. 11, the offices will close at noon.

BPW offices, also closed on Election Day, will close at noon on Return Day and remain closed for Veterans Day.

Lewes BPW to flush hydrants Nov. 8-9

The Lewes Board of Public Works will be flushing the fire hydrants on the town side of the city Tuesday, Nov. 8, and hydrants on Lewes Beach will be flushed Wednesday, Nov. 9.

Flushing will begin at 5 a.m., and officials say the process may cause water discoloration and low pressure. They advise residents and customers to run their water until it clears before use.

Lewes planners form subcommittee

The Lewes Planning Commission created an environmental protection subcommittee during its Oct. 19 meeting.

Tom Jensen will chair the group tasked with examining Article IX of the zoning code, which deals with floodplains, wetlands, water, drainage, stormwater management and erosion.  The subcommittee could also look at woodland protection, lot coverage, sea-level rise and pervious/impervious surfaces.  Joining Jensen will be Melanie Moser, Bob Heffernan, Debra Evalds and newcomer Amy Morasco.

Park contract to be awarded Nov. 9

The Lewes Board of Public Works will meet at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 9, at City Hall to discuss and award the contract for the Donovan Smith Manufactured Home Park water and sewer project.

An executive session will take place following discussion of bids, and the agenda states an open session will follow.

Workshop on Route 1 set for Nov. 16

The Delaware Department of Transportation is seeking input for an update to the Route 1 Corridor Capacity Preservation Program. The plan covers the areas from the Nassau Bridge near Lewes to the Route 9 grade-separated interchange just south of Dover Air Force Base. The purpose of the update is to formalize a 20-year plan that identifies access management and future roadway improvements with a goal of preserving the traffic capacity of Route 1.

The Sussex County workshop will take place from 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 16, at Lewes Fire Department Station 2, 32198 Janice Road, Lewes. There is also an online viewing option at us02web.zoom.us.

A recording of the workshop will be available at deldot.gov following the event.

The public can access the site and provide comments for a 30-day period, which begins Tuesday, Nov. 15, and ends Friday, Dec. 16. Comments can also be emailed to dotpublic@delaware.gov or mailed to DelDOT Community Relations, Attn: Olayiwola Okesola, program manager, PO Box 778, Dover, DE 19903.

Preliminary plans for Riverwood approved

At its Oct. 27 meeting, Sussex County Planning & Zoning Commission approved preliminary plans for a subdivision on a 59-acre parcel on the northwest side of Phillips Branch Road near the Hollymount Road intersection between Lewes and Long Neck.

Plans for Riverwood include 117 single-family home lots, 27 acres of open space with 23 acres being contiguous, a 30-foot vegetated perimeter buffer, a 25-foot buffer along a small section of tidal wetlands, sidewalks on one side of interior streets with connection to a multimodal path along Phillips Branch Road, and a pool and bathhouse.

Amenities must be constructed on or before the issuance of the 70th building permit. The final plan is subject to review by the planning and zoning commission.
