Lewes public hearings set March 7

Lewes Mayor and City Council will hold three public hearings at 6 p.m., Monday, March 7, at the Rollins Community Center and via Zoom. The first hearing concerns a proposed ordinance related to museums and outdoor exhibitions.

The ordinance sets standards for outdoor displays on museum property, such as the menhaden net reel.

As proposed, the net reel would be grandfathered and permitted to remain on the grounds of the Lewes Historical Society.

The second and third public hearings seek comments on a plan to develop 203 and 209 E. Savannah Road. White Bucks LLC is planning to build carriage houses on the open lot across from Dairy Queen and on the Two Dips parcel. Rehoboth returning to in-person meetings

Rehoboth Beach announced Feb. 28 it will resume in-person public meetings beginning Tuesday, March 15.

All city commission, board, committee and task force members will meet in person, and meetings will be open to in-person attendance by residents and other stakeholders. The city’s public meetings will continue to be livestreamed via the legislative portal on the city’s website.

The city also announced beginning Monday, March 14, only employees and members of the public who are not vaccinated will be required to wear a mask when inside city buildings or vehicles.

Rehoboth workshop slated March 7

Rehoboth Beach commissioners will hold a virtual workshop meeting at 9 a.m., Monday, March. 7. The agenda includes continued discussions on changes to the city’s wireless ordinance and the city’s policy for outside dining on public property.

The agenda also includes discussions on who should chair the new stormwater utility task force, and potential impacts on the city's water department operations related to new federal environmental regulations for lead and copper. Rehoboth holding hearings set March 8

Rehoboth Beach commissioners have scheduled a virtual special meeting for 9 a.m., Tuesday, March 8, to conduct three permit of compliance hearings and an executive session to discuss criteria for a new city manager. City Manager Sharon Lynn announced March 1 she was leaving city employment, effective May 6. She has been with the city since January 2014.

The first hearing is for Egg at 510 Rehoboth Ave. Under the name Missi’s Egg LLC, owner Melissa Moore has submitted an application to modify the floor plan of an existing restaurant serving alcoholic beverages with a patio. The second hearing is for Drift at 42 ½ Baltimore Ave. Under the name Drift Rehoboth Beach LLC, an application has been submitted to operate a new restaurant serving alcoholic beverages with two patios. The last hearing is for Coho’s Market at 305 Rehoboth Ave. Under the name JAM Holdings LLC, an application has been submitted to operate a new restaurant serving alcoholic beverages with a patio.

Freeman Highway set to be repaved

Delaware River and Bay Authority officials announced March 2 that contractor Allan Myers of Malvern, Pa., will begin milling and paving work to rehabilitate Freeman Highway, the main access route to the Cape May-Lewes Ferry. The construction activity is tentatively scheduled to start Monday, March 7.

Construction activity will take place weeknights from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. During the day, traffic will not be impacted, as one lane in each direction will remain open. Work is expected to be completed by May 20. Construction schedule may vary due to inclement weather.   

During this scheduled work, motorists may encounter delays on Freeman Highway during these overnight hours. Travelers are urged to be careful and stay alert in and around construction zones, obey posted speed limits and plan to take a few extra minutes during rush-hour periods.

Cape school board meeting canceled

The Cape Henlopen school board’s March 10 workshop meeting has been canceled. The regular meeting will be held at 6 p.m., Thursday, March 24, at Milton Elementary School.
