Lewes bike and ped meeting set May 23

The Lewes Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Committee will meet at 6 p.m., Tuesday, May 23, at city hall.

Dwayne Fox will present information about bike lanes on Donovans Road.

Old business includes maintenance and master plan updates, discussions on maps and bike corral signage, and an outreach review. 

New business includes a presentation, discussion and possible action on committee comprehensive plan revisions.

Rehoboth library task force to meet May 24

The first meeting of the Rehoboth Beach Public Library Task Force will be held at 6 p.m., Wednesday, May 24, at Rehoboth Elementary School, 500 Stockley St. Ext.

Currently the Rehoboth Beach Public Library is located on Rehoboth Avenue. Library officials announced earlier this year they would be moving the main facility outside city limits, while also maintaining a satellite library downtown. 

Officials have also announced the new location would be on a 5-acre parcel off Warrington Road.

The task force will develop program and service suggestions for both the library on Rehoboth Avenue and the library on Warrington Road.

The public is invited to attend and there is ample free parking. The meeting will be held in the Rehoboth Elementary School gym; enter the school through the gym entrance for direct access.

The next task force meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m., Wednesday, June 7, at Rehoboth Elementary School.

Lewes public art group meeting May 24

The Lewes Public Art Committee will meet at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 24, at the Rollins Center.

The agenda includes a review and feedback on the April 13 trip to Glenstone, an update and discussion on the DeWitt Godfrey installation at Canalfront Park, and continued discussion on the PAC’s mission, application process and strategic plan.

The Lewes Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee has requested PAC’s assistance with creative bike parking signs.

Public art unveiling set May 25 at Canalfront Park

The Lewes Public Art Committee’s 2023 temporary art installation, DeWitt Godfrey’s “The Gathering,” will be unveiled  Thursday, May 25, in Canalfront Park.

In addition to support from Lewes Mayor and City Council, the installation is supported, in part, by a grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.

Cape school board meets May 25

The Cape Henlopen school board will meet at 6 p.m., Thursday, May 25, at H.O. Brittingham Elementary. Members will discuss elementary math professional learning, middle school alignment and several board policies. For the full agenda and meeting link, go to capehenlopenschools.com.

Lewes officials to hold workshop May 25

Lewes Mayor and City Council will hold their monthly workshop at 9 a.m., Thursday, May 25, at city hall.

The agenda includes a request from the Park family at 506 Kings Highway to pave their driveway, an unimproved alley off Dewey Drive, and a discussion on voting rights for nonresident property owners.

Lewes environmental meeting May 25

The Lewes Planning Commission Environmental Subcommittee will meet at 1 p.m., Thursday, May 25, at city hall.

The agenda includes presentations on possible environmental ordinances with topics covering the floodplain, purpose statement alignment with Federal Emergency Management Agency, floodplain construction checklist/template using existing ordinance standards, and discussions with city engineer and building official. The group will consider recommendations to the LPC from the conversations.

Lewes housing subcommittee meets May 25

The Lewes Planning Commission Housing Subcommittee’s first meeting will be at 4:30 p.m., Thursday, May 25, at the Rollins Center.

Subcommittee membership and organization will be discussed, including use of available volunteer resources, before focusing on accessory-dwelling units in Lewes.

Lewes BPW board meeting May 25

The Lewes Board of Public Works will meet at 3 p.m., Thursday, May 25, at city hall, rescheduled from May 24.

Board members will certify the May 13 election results before swearing in elected directors Barbara Curtis and D. Preston Lee, followed by election of officers for the upcoming year.

Directors will discuss their plans for the future of wastewater treatment in Lewes and accept public comments.

Special Henlopen Acres commissioner meeting May 26

Henlopen Acres commissioners will hold a special meeting at 10 a.m., Friday, May 26, at town hall, 104 Tidewaters. The agenda calls for discussion and possible executive sessions related to a new town manager. For more information, call town hall at 302-227-6411.

Sussex County Dem-A-Thon streaming event set for May 27

The Sussex County Delaware Democratic Party will broadcast its third annual Dem-A-Thon fundraiser from 4:30 to 7 p.m., Saturday, May 27, to support local party candidates in the next election cycle. 

The Dem-A-Thon will feature a live auction, local entertainment and some surprise guests. Supporters can join statewide party leaders for this free, live event by going to Dem-A-Thon.com. A 5% portion of proceeds will go to support Sussex County women’s shelters.

Lewes charging fees for card transactions

The City of Lewes began charging a 2.95% convenience fee per transaction on all credit and debit card payments. E-checks will be charged $1.95 per transaction.

Officials approved the charges following an increase in per-transaction costs from card issuers.

Dewey commissioners appoint official

Dewey Beach commissioners voted unanimously May 19 to appoint Rick Hardy to the town’s board of adjustment for a three-year term.

Rehoboth approves awning license agreements

Rehoboth Beach commissioners unanimously approved license agreements for two businesses to install awnings over city sidewalks. 

Both applicants will have to pay a $325 administrative fee for preparation of the license agreement.

At Coast Hotel, 123 Second St., an awning will encroach 3 feet over the sidewalk on the Rehoboth Avenue side of the hotel, near the entrance to the hotel’s restaurant Sirocco.

At new business Oliver Whitby, 239 Rehoboth Ave., an awning will encroach 2-feet-6-inches over the sidewalk.
