Nicola Pizza’s move from downtown Rehoboth Beach to a new Route 1 Lewes location has been delayed for at least one more year.

On the 50-year-old pizzeria’s Facebook site, a Jan. 14 post said construction-related issues were the reason why it will remain in Rehoboth Beach through Labor Day weekend.

“Our new restaurant on the highway won't be completed until the end of July, which means we will be in downtown Rehoboth Beach for ONE MORE SUMMER,” said the post.

Nick Caggiano Sr. and his late wife Joan founded Nicola Pizza in 1971. The original restaurant opened on North First Street, and then a second location opened on Rehoboth Avenue in 2010. Caggiano announced in August 2020 that the restaurant was leaving downtown Rehoboth for a new Route 1 Lewes site on property adjacent to Ocean One Plaza, which the family already owned.

Roughly a year ago, Sussex County Council approved construction of the new restaurant. The plans include a 9,640-square-foot, two-story restaurant with a 1,726-square-foot covered deck and 144 parking spaces.

Specific closure dates for the two Rehoboth locations and an opening date for the Lewes location have not been set.

“We will update you with closing/opening dates as we get closer but we promise the Nicola Pizza on the Highway will be beautiful when completed and a place you will want to hang!” said the restaurant’s message.
