One-party rule goes both ways

February 1, 2022

I read Steve Regester's letter where he talks of the negative effects of one-party rule. I do agree, but I think a similar thing is happening in Sussex County.

Everyone complains about county council and planning and zoning commission’s easy approval of just about any project developers propose regardless of road and other infrastructure and environment considerations. Why should they care what the public thinks when they know most Sussex voters are going to vote for whoever has an R behind their name? We will never have politicians who are responsive to local voters as long as most people unthinkingly automatically vote for their national team.

I would also comment on his idea that the reason New Castle County taxes are high and Sussex are low are because of Democrats run one and Republicans the other. Eastern New Castle County has a city – Wilmington – with old, deteriorating infrastructure, loaded with poor people.

Eastern Sussex is full of upper-middle-class residents and a tourism industry that is a gold mine for the county. It’s not because of some superior Republican administration. Automatic voting for one’s national party without regard for performance of local politicians is wrong for either party.
