Parkinson’s group concert showcases healing power of music

May 13, 2025

The Parkinson’s Education and Support Group of Sussex County chorus recently presented a heartwarming concert at Epworth United Methodist Church in Rehoboth Beach.

Under the skilled direction of Doug Yetter, the chorus, mainly comprising individuals living with Parkinson’s disease and their care partners, showcased the transformative power of music.

The event began with a demonstration of the vocal exercises the chorus uses to prepare for their performances. Not only are these exercises essential for singing, they also help individuals maintain vocal strength and communication abilities, which can be greatly affected by Parkinson’s. The audience gained a deeper appreciation for the dedication behind each performance.

Following the warm-up, the chorus delighted the audience with a selection of sea-themed songs, including the nostalgic “Sea of Love,” the timeless “Beyond the Sea,” and the playful “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini.” The combination of familiar tunes and the singers’ heartfelt performances created a joyful and uplifting atmosphere.

Participants extend thanks to Rose Verona for her outstanding coordination of the event, ensuring everything ran smoothly and the chorus could shine.
