Bunky Dorofee, the Lewes Brewing Company’s head brewer, opened a large vat and, like a locomotive coming the down the tracks, the beer started barreling into cans.
It was the freshest beer in town April 6, but it’s also a very special brew.
Lewes Brewing has teamed up with the Lewes Junction Railroad & Bridge Association for Lewes Junction Lager. The LJRBA’s Engine 60 is even on the label.
The historic 1913 steam engine arrived May 5 in Lewes for display with the other rolling stock in Stango Park.
The nonprofit will receive a portion of the beer sales, according to Dave Jones, Lewes Brewing Company owner.
Jones said his father worked for the Penn Central, Conrail and Norfolk Southern railroads, so trains are near and dear to his heart.
“I’m just happy and proud to be part of this with the [LJRBA],” Jones said.
David Ludlow, a member of the LJRBA board of directors, stopped in on canning day to try the first sample.
“Oh yeah, that’s smooth,” Ludlow said as he became the first person to taste the 5.3% ABV American lager.
Dorofee said Lewes Junction Lager is a flavorful, drinkable beer.
“For our collabs, we like to do a more traditional, macro brew because we find that it appeals to a broader audience,” he said.
Lewes Brewing is canning 22.5 cases of the commemorative brew. The official release date is Saturday, May 9, which is National Train Day and the day the LJRBA expects to dedicate Engine 60 in Lewes.
Ludlow said they will christen the locomotive with a can of beer.
Jones said Lewes Brewing Company will also release a special Lewes250 beer before June.
