Ravens earn state SkillsUSA medals

Sussex Technical High School  recently announced that its students earned 62 medals in the state SkillsUSA competition and that one of its electronics teachers was named State Advisor of the Year.

Dennis Smith of Seaford was honored at the annual State SkillsUSA Awards Ceremony on April 4 at the Modern Maturity Center in Dover. Smith has been teaching at Sussex Tech since 2000. Prior to that, he worked with electronics in the U.S. Air Force for 23 years. Smith is a veteran SkillsUSA supporter. While a high school student, Smith was the SkillsUSA/VICA president of his technical class. In 1975, when SkillsUSA/VICA was only eight years old, he competed in the Opening and Closing Ceremonies competition in the state of Florida.

Of the medals, 24 medals were gold, qualifying state winners for national competition this June in Kansas City, Mo. The remaining medals were 27 silver for second place and 11 bronze for third.

In Chapter Business Procedure gold went to the team of Kira Lyle (Millsboro), Jessica Lynch (Millsboro), Paige Robinson (Georgetown), Chelsea Timmons (Selbyville) and Ashton Tomlinson (Millsboro); silver went to Laura Chambers (Seaford), Richard Gallo (Rehoboth), Kaitlin Holland (Laurel), Hannah Krause (Milton), Catherine Minton (Laurel) and Emily Stang (Greenwood).

Other gold medalists include the following:  Extemporaneous Speech, Demontrae Jenkins (Greenwood); Prepared Speech,  Brenna Gause (Harbeson); Auto Refinishing Technology, Daniel Waydelis (Lincoln); Crime Scene Investigation, team of Chase Milligan (Seaford), Aidan Gause (Harbeson) and Mary Batten (Milton).

In Tech Computer Applications, gold was awarded to Tara Windels (Laurel) and bronze to Samantha Christensen (Harbeson).

In Cabinetmaking, gold went to Trey Jewell (Seaford) and silver to Drew Stewart (Millsboro).

In Diesel Equipment, gold went to Ian Lankford (Laurel); silver to Nick Panagakos (Lewes) and bronze to Matt Ritter (Seaford).

In Marine Service Tech, gold was awarded to Robert Robles (Lincoln); silver to Jonathon Walton (Georgetown) and bronze to Zach Bishop (Milford).

In Broadcast News,  gold medals were won by the team of Rebecca Southmayd (Ocean View), Katie Beitzel (Lewes), Stephen Mervine (Bridgeville) and Bethany Killmon (Bridgeville), and silver medals by the team of Meredith Husar (Milton), Natalie Sava (Seaford), Haley Cherrix (Laurel) and Emily Morris (Delmar).

In Related Technical Math, gold went to Priyen Patel (Seaford).

In Robotics, gold went to the team of Zachary Richard (Ocean View) and Michael Cole (Seaford); silver to the team of Nick Bishop (Milford) and Bobby Christensen (Harbeson) and bronze to the team of Zachary Keyek (Lincoln), and Sam Mitchell (Seaford).

In TV Production, gold was awarded to the team of Amanda Sava (Seaford) and David Hignutt (Millsboro).

In American Spirit, silver was awarded to the team of Shannon Bailey (Seaford), Shanice Edwards (Bridgeville) and Sam Schiffer (Millsboro).

In Audio/Radio, silver went to the team of Ben Dispoto (Lewes) and Taylor Thornberg (Lewes). In Carpentry, silver went to Joe Garvilla (Georgetown); in Collision Repair, silver went to Austin Purdy (Dagsboro); and in Community Service, silver went to the team of Ashleigh Sturgis (Greenwood), Elizabeth Toomey (Rehoboth) and Nikolia Demopoulos (Millsboro).

Law Enforcement, silver was awarded to Madelyn Crimmins (Millsboro) and  bronze to Justin Stevenson (Laurel).

In Principles of Technology, silver went to Joey Powers (Georgetown) and bronze to Maria Menard (Laurel). In Job Interview, bronze was awarded to Janoria Sutton-Bullock (Milton).  In Web Page Design, bronze was won by the team of Caleb Hagan (Milton) and Walker Muth (Milton), and in Photography, bronze went to Krystin Gibson (Delmar).
