Rehoboth Beach is experimenting with a new style of dune-crossing accessibility mat and is seeking public feedback.

Instead of the typical blue mat that’s become commonplace – and much appreciated – the city has installed a CocoPath mat on the two Rehoboth Avenue dune crossings.

The city announced the installation of the all-natural mats on its Facebook page Aug. 26.

“We believe that these mats will probably be less slippery when they get wet,” said the post.

The mats are made by New Jersey-based Accessrec. According to the company’s website, the mats are made from durable materials that are weather-resistant and can withstand UV rays, saltwater, sand erosion, and foot and wheelchair traffic. They also are slip-resistant and have cotton webbing at the ends to prevent fraying.

Lynne Coan, city spokesperson, said the blue mats cost $52.46 per foot, while the CocoPath mats are $26.79 per foot. As for durability in Rehoboth’s challenging environment, the city will have to wait and see, she said.

The city is using a Community Transportation Fund grant, obtained through Rep. Pete Schwartzkopf, to obtain the new CocoPath mats as well as three additional beach wheelchairs, said Coan.
