The seventh annual Fire Fightin’ 5K Run/Walk Aug. 22 attracted 211 participants and 22 kid dashers who started the competition by racing for medals.
Bjornar Slettvag, 36, of Washington, D.C., was the overall winner in 17:46. He was chased to the finish line by Andrew Palen in 17:59.
Mark Walchinsky, 42, won the male masters race in 18:52.
Ava Gumb, a 15-year-old high school sophomore from Staten Island, N.Y., was first female and third overall in 18:31. Completing the top 5 female leaderboard were Nina Thompson in 20:24, Danielle Polun in 21:10, Shannon Cody in 21:35, and Brynlea Rieger in 22:37, with Elizabeth Tretter, winner of the female masters race, in 22:43.
The top 8 males in the 10-13 age group all broke 30 minutes, led by Beacon Middle School’s Aaron Tikiob in 21:28. He was followed by Owen Parsons in 22:33 and Bennett Brumbley in 25:19. Julian Kaufmann, 10, of Lewes ran 27:52.
Zoe Peters, 17, of Rehoboth won the 14-18 age group in 28:00.
Bree Terhune, 10, of Milton ran 27:59. Kenny Terhune, 41, ran 24:15. The Polun family from Lutherville, Timonium, Md., was well represented with Thomas, 10, running 27:02; Danielle, 14, in 21:10; Shannon, 14, in 28:56; Jason, 47, in 22:54; and Rebecca, 47, in 28:19.
